How has it worked during the first year in Cairo

How it works

  • People are encouraged to pay an amount they can afford
  • The price of a double scoop of ice-cream can range from 1 EGP (US$ 0.13) to 14 EGP (US$ 1.8) in order to cover ingredients, salaries, rent and maintenance, etc. (exchange rate in December 2015)
  • Through the principle of solidarity-based subsidy, those able, would pay up to US$1.8 for their ice-cream in order to subsidize the ice-creams of those who cannot afford to pay more than a minimum.
  • In addition, those who want to pay an extra ice-cream can offer it to someone who cannot afford to buy.
